How are Knowsley Council Reducing Emissions

Reducing carbon emissions by cutting down on gas and electricity use in council buildings has been a high priority for the programme.

The Council has successfully secured £4.2m of external grant funding from the government-funded Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS). The funding has enabled improvement projects at the Courtyard Buildings at Court Hey Park, the River Alt Resource Centre and Huyton Library, replacing gas heating systems with Air Source Heat Pumps, the installation of roof mounted solar PV arrays and LED lighting.

The works are expected to produce an annual carbon saving of up to 440 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Further external funding has also been secured to create a Heat Decarbonisation Plan for 19 council buildings. The plan identifies low-carbon heating alternatives, as well as the suitability for Solar PV, LED lighting, wall insulation and window replacement.

Dalton Foljambe Primary School

Dalton Foljambe Primary School

Back in January, we started working with Wickersley Partnership Trust to install Solar PV on schools across Rotherham and Sheffield helping the school financially, saving money on their energy bills but improving the reputations of the schools by reducing their carbon footprint and becoming an eco-friendly school. We completed a 66.25 kWp at Dalton Foljambe Primary School which will generate over m3 MWh of energy every year and reduce the school’s carbon footprint by 10.35 tonnes which is equivalent to 475 trees being planted.

The Solar PV system consists of 125 x Longi LR5-66HTH-530M solar panels connected to 63 SolarEdge S1200 optimisers. There WERE two SolarEdge 25K inverters used in this project as the system was spread across different buildings at the school.

Here is a quote from Lee Rushforth their Senior Premises and Compliance Manager: “‘By harnessing the power of solar energy, our school is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also setting an example for our students and community. With these solar panels, we are not just generating electricity; we are generating opportunities. Opportunities for our students to learn about renewable energy, opportunities to save on energy costs, and opportunities to contribute to a sustainable future. This investment not only benefits our school financially but also educates and inspires the next generation.”

KJ Body Repairs Goes Green

KJ Body Repairs Goes Green

At the start of 2024, we returned to Stoke-On-Trent as we had been recommended by our recent customer at Kia Car Dealership. After doing such an amazing job the first time around at the dealership we were happy to help more local businesses go green and start a brighter future. Solar panels will be extremely beneficial for businesses that work in the daytime especially in the car industry as they will be using a lot of energy to use some of the equipment.

The 14.96 kWp system consists of 34 Longi solar panels and is estimated to produce 12.09 MWh of solar energy annually which is equivalent to 107 trees being planted.

James Norward an ambassador at Kia had this to say about the installation “We’re pleased to recommend Genfit for their outstanding work in installing solar panels for our dealership and bodyshop. Last year, they successfully implemented a solar system at our dealership, impressing us with their professionalism and top-quality work. Recently, we engaged Genfit again for our bodyshop, and once more, they delivered beyond our expectations. Throughout both projects, the entire Genfit team demonstrated professionalism and great customer service, keeping us informed at every stage. The impact of the installations has been remarkable, resulting in significant energy cost savings and aligning perfectly with our commitment to sustainability.”

Hardwood Sales

Hardwood Sales

Back in April we worked with the Liverpool based company “Hardwood Sales” to install solar panels on the roof of their newly built warehouse to reduce energy costs.

Hardwood Sales Limited is a specialist hardwood importer, supplying timber for some iconic projects including Churchill’s War Office, the Royal Academy of Music and The Shard. It has used the loan from Lloyds Bank to invest in 1,000 longi PV solar panels, allowing the business to start producing 65% of its own electricity, becoming more energy independent and significantly reducing costs.

The global company, which is headquartered in Liverpool, is based on a nine-acre site with a newly built 100,000 sq ft warehouse plus a manufacturing plant. Five-day work weeks mean that surplus electricity is often generated at weekends, and the business sells this energy back to the grid – helping grow profits further, while contributing to the diversification of the UK’s energy mix and reducing strain on the grid when demand is high.

The solar panels have helped Hardwood Sales futureproof its energy costs, meaning the money that would have been tied up in rising energy prices can now be invested in creating new jobs and upskilling the workforce. The savings made in the business so far have allowed it to commit to the building of an additional manufacturing plant starting September, boosting future growth prospects.

As well as making cost savings, the solar panels also offer Hardwood Sales sustainability benefits in the form of over 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved.

Tony Collins, managing director of Hardwood Sales Ltd, said: “Rising energy costs have been putting pressure on businesses over the last year, and the security that these solar panels have provided us with has been a real relief. Not only have they allowed us to save money on our energy bills, which can be reinvested into the business to help it grow, they’ve also given us a stake in the UK’s ambitions for net zero by 2050.

“Our customers come to us from across the globe, and so it’s important that we show them the work that’s being done within the business to invest in our offering and protect profit margins. The support from Lloyds Bank has put us in a great place to do this.”

Alistair Pike, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank, said: “Hardwood Sales is an excellent example of a business that is invested in its future growth prospects, and knows the importance that making proactive, tangible changes now has for maintaining that growth.

“The business’ latest investment will bring them two-fold benefits, prioritising cost savings while boosting its own green credentials. We’re proud to be by the side of businesses like Hardwood Sales Ltd, and we’re looking forward to supporting them throughout their journey.”

The system consisted of 775 x Longi Solar, LR5-66HIH-500M solar panels with half of the amount of P1100 optimisers as two panels connect to every optimiser. They were wired up to the Solaredge90K manager and two SE100K managers which were placed in an outer building.
